2996 - Why 9.11 Matters...

Some of you may have already noticed the new addition to the left-side bar.  It's a "site sticker" with the name of the individual I've been assigned after volunteering to do a remembrance with the " 2996 Tribute " movement.

What is the "2996 Tribute"?  This tribute is a web-based movement to remember each and every one of the 2996 victims that died during the terrorist attacks on 9.11 - At the WTC, Pentagon, and in PA.  This isn't just an empty "be with the families" or "be with everyone" general statement, but an attempt to showcase the lives on a personal and individual basis.

Each volunteer will receive a name of an individual to highlight on their own blogs/sites.  There are resources we can use to see if pictures are available, details about this person's life, etc.  It'll be my privilege to get to know Joseph as I get closer to 9.11.06 and gather information about him: who he was, what he did, and what he left behind.

As we get move towards 9.11.06, I'd like to post tidbits about Joseph so that the few of us that visit my site might get to know him a little.  On 9.11.06, I'd like to think that I won't have anything new to post, but rather just a recap of the things we've learned about him over the coming 6 weeks.

If you'd like to be invovled, the link above has sign up information, or you can register directly, here .  If you do, please let me know so that I can keep up with you and know your individual too.

Later.

Jason, I think the 2996 tribute is great!! I am interested to see what we can learn about Mr. Joseph Chavalier.

Thanks Dave. I have no idea what we're going to get into. What I find amazing is that hearing about the death of nearly 3,000 people is horrific, we're still hacked off about being attacked on our own soil, but there is a facet of pain that very few of us understand. Yes, 3,000 people died, but those were 3,000 INDIVIDUALS that had families, friends, and their own little corner of our world.

I guess the question I'm asking (myself, and for others to consider) is if the atrocity that we feel for a group of 3,000 lives lost equal to the 3,000 individuals lost? Do the parts equal the sum? Probably not. We'd probably be much more upset if 1 person died that we know than 3,000 that we don't. But in truth, the scope of this tragedy is 3,000 individual holes left in the fabric of their circle. The horror of 9.11 magnifies when it stops being a nameless, faceless group of 3,000 people and becomes 1+1+1+1+... all the way up to 2,996 individual impacts.

I struggle to put it into words, but seeing and concentrating on a single face, a single life from 9.11 makes it so much more signifigant to me (and it was already huge). It makes the "War on Terror" so much more appropriate and necessary (and should have been done a long time ago).

Thanks for stopping by, Dave.
